Statton strikes late to earn late point in derby

A local derby with plenty of intensity saw Morwenstow and Bude play out a hard fought 1-1 draw on Wednesday night. It was the away side who came out of the blocks quickest with some good passing and well constructed attacks. Laurie Turpin and Hayden White both had efforts blocked whilst the Morwenstow goalkeeper pulled off a wonderful full length save to deny Ryan Leverton opening the scoring. As it was that honour went to the home sides Sam Hockin; the morwenstow left back picked up the ball on the half way line and his speculative ball into the box seemed to catch everyone out and flew straight into the net. It came at a time when Morwenstow were getting on top in the game. Striker Norm Foster continued to cause the Bude defence problems and last gasp blocks from Jake Salt, James Finlay and Matt Pepperell all ensured the scoreline stayed 1-0 at half time.

The second half was a little flatter as both teams tired. Steven Hill in the Bude goal pulled off a good save whilst a clever free kick from Tommy Statton almost saw Leverton equalise but for the ball to be scrambled away off the line. The game looked set to be drifting away from Bude who kept battling until the end and it was in the 90th minute their efforts were rewarded. Alex Harrison took a quick throw on the right to Leverton who turned his defender and picked out Statton on the edge of the box who jinked past the on rushing Morwenstow rear guard before unleashing a right footed shot in off the post to salvage a draw.

It was a spirited performance from Bude who has 4 players playing two games in two days, especially the goal hero Statton who got his just rewards in the 180th minute of his footballing week.
