The Ladies section of the Club have been fairly constant over the past few years. Back in 2018 they were riding fairly high in the Southwest Women's League, under the management of Rich Pinkus, having previously been promoted from the Cornwall League. They contested the County Cup Final against a very strong Callington side, who were playing in the League above them, but narrowly lost!!!! The new season started off fairly well and with a new manager having taken over due to the retirement of Pinky, were in a good position, until the dreaded virus stopped everything in its tracks.
When the time came to get the squad together again for whenever play was to be resumed they suddenly found that they were without a manager, and six players. Three had left and three had retired. The squad was small enough as it was, but this was decimating and it looked as though they were going to go out of existence. The first decision to be made was to withdraw from the current league as they couldn't be expected to maintain that standard with a lot of players to be replaced. It was discussed as to what was required and Pinky came back to the fold to try and save it from collapse. Firstly they requested to join the Devon Women's League, for a change, which was accepted. Then the job began of recruiting new players, and after four weeks of hard work they have managed to secure the commitment of eight new players who have already shown us their attitude and enthusiasm which will get us back on track.
The first friendly we had we had to cancel for lack of players. The second one we nearly cancelled but the opposition said they could bring more than enough and then at least everybody would get a game. The third game on Sunday against Callington was really good because we had an influx of the new players and everything went reasonably well. Another one planned for this Thursday down at Wadebridge, a further two against St Austell and Fremington should hopefully get us on the way to fitness and stability.
Still looking for new players, if you or anybody you know might be interested. Would be good to have you with us.
